In Memoriam: Captain William “Bill” Connor

I’m saddened to share the passing on February 7, 2026 of Captain William “Bill” Connor, a long‑time and deeply respected member of our community. Bill served for many years as Chair of the G‑10 Committee, guiding its work with steady leadership, technical insight, and an unwavering commitment to aviation safety.

Bill’s aviation career was distinguished and wide‑ranging. He served as a Marine Corps helicopter pilot before beginning a long tenure as a Delta Air Lines captain, flying primarily the L‑1011. His operational experience, professionalism, and calm judgment shaped his contributions to the committee and earned the respect of colleagues across the industry.

Within SAE, Bill was a driving force behind the development of numerous Aerospace Recommended Practices, particularly in the area of laser safety. Those of us who worked alongside him on the G‑10T Laser Safety Subcommittee remember his thoughtful guidance, his willingness to mentor others, and his dedication to advancing standards that protect aircrews and the public.

Bill’s influence on the committee spanned decades, and his legacy endures in the standards he championed and the people he inspired. He will be remembered not only for his expertise, but for his kindness, integrity, and quiet professionalism.

We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Retha, family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working with him.
